Some things I've been building since my time at Google, and some resources for you.

Hi everyone,

It’s been a busy and incredibly rewarding season since I transitioned from my role at Google into a new chapter of consulting, teaching, and building. I entered this season thinking I'd slow down a bit, but Michelle regularly reminds me that she's pretty sure that's impossible for me (as you'll see below). I’ve been focused on projects I’m deeply passionate about and wanted to share an update, along with some resources I hope you'll find valuable.

First, the most important update: family. The biggest win of this new chapter, hands down, has been the flexibility to be more present at home. Being able to teach my daughter how to swim this summer and making it to breakfasts and dinners has been a game-changer. You can't really quantify that kind of return, even with the long hours that bookend the day to accomplish all of the below.

Professionally, my energy has been focused on three key areas:

1. Driving Client Impact at PCG I’m learning so much alongside some amazing people, helping enterprise teams navigate everything from Financial Due Diligence to GTM transformations. Our goal is always to find solutions that are strategic, operator-friendly, and audit-ready. A huge thank you to my partners in this great work: Aaron Einhorn, Ryan Volk, and Chris Strunk, along with the rest of the awesome team. 2. Building for the Community & Classroom My goal has been to demystify complex finance, and the response has been incredible.

  • For Students: I launched workshop-style finance courses for SJSU and Ohlone College, connecting real-world corporate finance with personal finance. Students are really appreciating the combination of rigor and real-world application, resulting in high attendance and participation across all of my courses - the biggest compliment a lecturer could have. My biggest "complaint" from students so far is a request to make more videos - not the problem I was expecting, but I'll take it! Here's an example of how we covered the time value of money (video here).

  • For the Accounting Community: The brilliant Angela Liu from Gaapsavy and I published a deep dive on marketplace accounting (video here). She's one of the sharpest technical accountants I know, and I'm thrilled to be co-hosting the Gaapsavvy podcast with her. You can also check out her newsletter via Substack here, that summarizes the discussion. Next up: SaaS vs. consumption revenue.

  • For Dealmakers: With PCG, I wrote a white paper on why having an accounting SME on your deal desk is a strategic advantage that can pay for itself many times over by preventing costly downstream errors. You can read it here, which is an awesome resource for VPs of Sales, Revenue, or the C-suite trying to find ways to maximize what they get out of each contract and negotiation.

3. Leaning into the Future with AI The potential for AI in our field is massive, and I'm excited to be a part of it.

  • I recorded a practical starter video on how accountants can start using AI today (video here). I’m honored to be presenting this topic to the PagerDuty Controllership SLT soon.

  • I also formally joined TAbot as an advisor, helping them build their incredible AI platform for technical accounting research and writing. Harton Wong and Nina Zhao, CPA thank you for letting me join you for the journey. You can watch the original interview I had with them here.

If any of these areas spark an idea, or if you'd just like a second set of eyes on something related to revenue recognition, GTM strategy, or AI in finance, my door is always open. Please don't hesitate to reach out.

Stay good, stay kind, aim up, and do cool things with cool people.

Until next time,

Devon
